Suitcase Cat Bed Tutorial

Many of you know I love cats. Adore. Love. Love. I have four sweet bundles of fur that purr and love and that to me is a sweet thing. I have purchased a few cat beds that are located in various places around the house. Plain cat beds that do the job and provide a sweet nesting place but the crafty girl in me was looking to create something different. Something fun and unexpected. I did a quick search on Etsy for catbeds and came across the inspiration I was looking for. A vintage suitcase cat bed.

TaDa! Here she is!

I picked up an old suitcase at the Goodwill for $10. I love everything about it. The metal buckles, the luggage tag, and the blue silk lining inside. Perfect!

I purchased wooden legs, leg mounts and screws at Home Depot.

My husband was a big help here. We placed each mount on the bottom of suitcase on all four corners and drilled right through.

I spray painted the legs a Nickel color. I love the light sheen!

A quick clean up with a Magic Eraser. Genius cleaning tool!

A few craft supplies to decorate their new pad!

Cat tested.

Ginobili approves!

It’s all good. ~ Donna

P.S. I will be linking to great parties this week. Check them out for crafty inspiration!

  1. This came out really great…how did you get the top to stay up? I wonder if it will fall shut with my ole boy who likes to still go in circles fluffing and fluffing…lol

    • Hi Selma, I have it placed up against a bookcase in my office and have not had it fall down once. I bought a support hinge (hobby hardware) from Home Depot to place in the inner corner of both the top and bottom but I have not got around to screwing it in yet. It’s brass and made by Schlage. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a sweet comment!

  2. Hi Beth, Thank you so much for stopping by and leaving a sweet comment. I have four cat children and one in particular, Ginobili, loves the suitcase cat bed. I placed it near my computer so whenever I am on the computer, she hops right in the bed. I recently picked up another suitcase at the Goodwill. I hope to put it together over my Thanksgiving vacation next week.

    Have a wonderful day!

  3. There are so many pictures of cute suitcase cat beds out there… that you think there’d be more logical tutorials! Yours is the best. Thanks for putting this out there as a resource for those of us that want to create fabulous beds for our cat children! It’s adorable!

  4. Aww, how cute. I think my puppy would love this. :)

    Cheers,

  5. OMG I love this DIY!!! My old man cat Salem is just getting into the idea of sleeping in a cat bed..although he still prefers his recliner infront of the TV with his blanket laid down on it..and I bet he would really enjoy this. Thanks so much for the wonderful idea.

By the way I found your lovely blog thanks to Homemaker On A Dime’s Creative Bloggers’ Party & Hop!!

  6. Hi, friend! I’m admiring all your creativity here. Can you please share them with us at the Creative Bloggers’ Party & Hop. Hope to see you there at the party :)

  7. This is absolutely too cute!!! Isn’t it true that cats just love suitcases? I know ours did when I was growing up. You did a great job. :)

Thanks for joining my Weekend Bloggy Reading party, and for linking back (I appreciate that!). Stop by Serenity Now again soon! :)

  8. Fabulous idea and you pulled it off so nicely. Happy that kitty is using it too!

  9. What a great idea! i love the accessories you added to it. i bet your cats love their new bed.

  10. What a cute idea! Your cat looks like he likes his new bed.

  11. Thanks for the sweet comments everyone! Dillypoo, I have not braced the lid on the cat bed just yet. I will be purchasing a toy box safety latch to install tomorrow. The top is sturdy and I have it placed up against the windowsill and jiggling it around has not caused the lid to drop just yet. There is that “yet” though. While some family members would be happy to see my cat trapped in a suitcase….lol not me so much.

  12. Too! Cute! Did you brace the lid so it doesn’t trap a kitty inside?

  13. Thanks for visiting my blog and leaving your sweet comment. I think the suitcase pet bed is a precious idea! I have seen them around and if I had an animal at home, I would be doing this one.

  14. Really cute! Perfect for my two cats!

  15. I share your love of cats. That bed is adorable. My cat doesn’t usually like the things I make for her-at least not for the purpose they were made! I made a cat tunnel(Amy Butler pattern) out of her favorite fabric and she dragged it around and spread herself out on top of it, but wouldn’t go in it!

  16. Aunt Christine says:

Ginobili is so lucky to have you for his mom!!! I love his new pad.

I eagerly waiting for more posts.

    Love, Aunt Kiki

  17. Well, that’s about the cutest pet accessory I’ve ever seen! What a fun idea!

  18. What a great idea! Your cats sure are lucky to have you!

It’s funny – the suitcase looked really big, until the last picture where you see Ginobili in it. Or maybe it’s that Ginobili is that big. :-) He sure seems to be quite pleased.
