The Pocket of Pigeon Mountain~A Photography Hike

The Pocket of Pigeon Mountain is filled with the most beautiful wildflowers in Georgia. It is home to the Shirley Miller Wildflower Trail. The Trail is a quarter mile of boardwalk visitors use, so that the flowers will not be overrun by those who are viewing the lovely site. At the end of the boardwalk, as you follow along the creek, the trail leads you to the wonderful waterfalls.

I joined the Trail Dames on a hike and as I walked along, I felt like I was in a rain forest. The climate was moist and the deep green of the trees and water splashing over the creek rocks, reminded me of my hike through the rain forest in St. Lucia. It was a sweet day, and I soaked it all in smiling all the way!

I am no wildflower expert but a little searching and I was able to find the names of some of the wildflowers I saw along the trail. I have added their names under their photo.

Virginia Bluebell

White Trillium

Star Chickweed

Star Chickweed

Eastern Columbine

Trailing Trillium

Canada Violet

Sharp-lobed Hepatica

Trail Dame Joan captured this shot of me. I could not step off the boardwalk so I was often on my knees, leaning over, trying to get as close as I could to the flowers.

The Pocket of Pigeon Mountain is close to a 2 hour drive from Atlanta. It’s a great day hike adventure that would be a treat for families. The boardwalk is safe and easy to follow along. The short hike to the falls is moderate and we did pass young children along the way.
